illustration of ultraviolet radiation from two colliding neutron stars, known as a kilonova, witnessed for the first time in galaxy NGC 4993 on the 17th of August 2017. kilonova are thought to be the origin for all elements heavier than iron in the universe, ejecting gold & platinum into the interstellar medium at 0.2c. the merger also produced gravitational waves & gamma rays, both of which were detected by LIGO-Virgo & Fermi/INTEGRAL detectors respectively. galaxy NGC 4993 is about 130 million light-years from earth in the constellation hydra.
