Review: I feel cheated after reading all the reviews especially from other authors only to ind itās rubbish. There wasnāt one likable character, Holly/Kate change of personality was totally ridiculous. Sophie from being an intelligent and sophisticated young woman becomes a pathetic ghost. James, that loves his wife and is a devoted Father suddenly becomes a philanderer and worse.I cannot understand the morals of this story whereas it seems for katy an adulteress affair is fine it doesnāt apply to James. Apart from this the author seems intent on forcing her left wing political sympathies down readers throats at every turn of the page. Since when did only wealthy young people drink too much and behave badly. Since when did only wealthy young men take drugs and take advantage of young intoxicated women. The rape of a student was of course criminal but no way could I consider that a rape charge should be brought against a man that is married and has been involved with a young woman for months. I cannot imagine any prosecutor considering this case worth pursuing. Apart from all the above, the court scenes are boring, the dialogue is chic lit and over half way I started to skim read the pages as it was so boring.

Review: Anatomy of a Scandal by Sarah Vaughan is a book Iām not too sure about. I have mixed feelings about this acclaimed courtroom drama that has everyone singing its praises. I gave it 3 stars on Goodreads, because I canāt see anything extraordinary in it. We all know that when it comes to legal thrillers, John Grisham is the master of this genre. There was a time when I used to read every book that he wrote. Compared to those, this is a very tame affair.Warning: This review contains spoilers, and is reflective of how I felt while reading this book. Not everyone is expected to agree with me. When James Whitehouse, a junior minister and the Prime Ministerās closest friend, is accused of rape by a colleague, his wife Sophie, knows that he is innocent. He may have indulged in a short-lived affair with the woman, but he was no rapist. So, even with all the anger and hurt about the affair, she is willing to stand by her husband when he needs her the most.QC Kate Woodcroft knows that Whitehouse is guilty, and she will do everything to prove it in front of the jury. She might come off as insensitive and unfeeling when it comes to grilling witnesses, but she knows how to sway a jury, and she feels very strongly about making everyone see the truth. As the drama unfolds in the courtroom, I couldnāt help but feel bored. The book was about fifty pages too long. There are no real surprises. I was able to make the connection between Holly and Kate almost from the beginning. I knew what had happened to Holly quite early on too. And the secret being alluded to since the beginning of the book, the secret that Sophie knows, is not as explosive as the writer would have you believe. In the middle of all this, is something that I really didnāt like. There was this general thread that men are incapable of being faithful, as evidenced by both Sophieās and Kateās fathers, as well as Sophieās husband. The thing that had me feeling uncomfortable was the tone of acceptability in the book. There are many books about women who wonāt leave their cheating husbands because of one reason or the other, but those books make you feel that what these women are doing is wrong. This book felt like the author was implying that staying with a cheat is better than not having a man in your life. Sophie was like all women in such situations, not wanting to leave but not wanting to stay either. So, there isnāt anything blatant which I can pinpoint, but I got the general feeling that as Sophie justifies Jamesās actions, the reader is also supposed to do so.And then there is the whole underlying lesson of not taking anyone to court for sexual assault or rape. Because that is what I learned from this book. If Kate had won the case that she was prosecuting at the beginning of the book, or if she had sounded optimistic about the outcome of any such cases, it could be said that she was up against a master and she lost. But she lost the previous case, and keeps dropping gems like, āJuries are keen to convict the predatory rapistā¦.yet when it comes to relationship rape, theyād really rather not know, thank you very much.ā She keeps telling us that she wins cases, unfortunately we donāt see much evidence of that. Even in the courtroom scenes, she never comes across as the brilliant QC she is supposed to be.So after reading 350 plus pages, we come to know that nothing much has changed, except the lives of the women involved, while the man is free to go back to his life, both public and private. There is hardly any mention of what happened to poor Olivia after the trial; Sophie is a shallow woman all through the story, with the sole aim of landing and then keeping a husband in her life; and Kate is destined to be alone and unloved because she chose to have a demanding career. For a fan of outstanding courtroom dramas like To Kill A Mockingbird, A Time to Kill and Pelican Brief, this book is very mediocre, with forgettable characters and a weak storyline.

Review: Pretentious literary flourishes throughout this book interfered with the pacing so much that it was difficult to read. The real point of this book does not happen until more than halfway through, and is fairly predictable. It is that at that point that the pacing picks up, and by then I had learned to skip the tedious descriptive language. Courtroom scenes are Perry Mason-esque: āYouāre a liar, arenāt you?!?!ā Omg. Torturous read.

Review: It is hardwired into us that we should placate and mollify: bend our will to that of men.āā Sarah Vaughan, Anatomy of a ScandalI REALY enjoyed this book greatly. For anyone going into this thinking it will be light reading..boy would that be a mistake. It was alot darker then I thought it would be and deals with some pretty heavy stuff, including rape.SPOILERS:This book is very VERY relevant to the Me too movement. I adored not knowing what would happen. One thing I do not like in a book is when it gets to predictable. And I wanted to be surprised.I felt for Kate..and Sophia whom I initially did not like although that changed. James was a psycho and the ending the writer chose to go with was interesting and Iād say quite fitting. This is one not to be missed. 4.5 stars.

Review: When a charismatic married politician is charged with the rape of his former mistress, we see events unfold through the eyes of his wife and the female prosecuting lawyer. Will the Old Boysā Club save him or will this be the final scandal that finally drags him down? This book is extremely engaging and well-paced, yet it also made me stop and think about the ethical issues faced by several of the characters, particularly his wife. Of course, there is a lot to think about regarding consent, and when does consent take place during an encounter between two people.SPOILER ALERTSI thought it was interesting that when his wife finally confronted him, she talked about how he had lied on the standā¦. this meant that he had knowingly raped this woman, but she didnāt seem to confront him about that directly, just that he had lied.I also thought there was an interesting throwaway line, where the jury asked to read the plaintiffās statement once more during their deliberations. This incident wasnāt expanded upon, but it haunted me, because I thought the opportunity to read the statement during their deliberations would have a strong impact on their ability to reach the right verdict.
