Christmas Eve

It is the morning of Christmas Eve. Outside it is raining and grey. A raven caws as I write and out the balcony window I can see seagulls soaring above the neighboring buildings. Without the lights on it is dark enough inside that the lights on the tree shine brightly.

The boys are still asleep. It is quiet. Memories of past Christmases roll through my mind and I realize how much more Christmassy this holiday is thanks to little Julek. I have always loved Christmas and this year I have had someone to share my excitement with.

We drew snowmen and santas, hearts, stars and sleighs. Daydreamed about sledding, skiing and ice skating. Anticipated snow. Got our very first Christmas tree. Made our own golden star and together placed it on the top. Wrote a letter to Santa. Baked cookies, decorated them, then hung them on the tree. Got presents for everyone and wrapped them in beautiful paper and satin ribbons, red, green and gold…

Today is the day. Yet, somehow I always feel a bit sad. Because it brings the end of this wonderful, magical warmth and excitement.

But tonight we feast, drink and be merry! Everyone's excitement and joy mixed together and when we finally begin to open presents the smiles and laughs will be the best gift ever!

Merry Christmas!!
