Are we too quick to beat the drum for the new advances in Virtual Reality Technology?

The field of Artificial Intelligence is soaring incredibly in order to keep up with the demands of technological needs and umpteen discoveries. These necessitate continual up gradation and elevation of technology to the growing needs of the scholarly scientific developments which were possible because of the advent of artificial technology in the first place.

The recent advancement of virtual reality technology fills engineers with awe as well as leaves them intimidated and brooding over corrections to cover the shortcomings. The new research was undertaken in collaboration with German car firm Audi and a Finnish start-up, Varjo. Audi produced a high-end headset worth €5,995; £5,170. The headset uses a technique of human eye resolution called foveated rendering. This feature allows eye-tracking technology which tells which part of the image is been focused on and then concentrates its processing power on that part of the image to render high definition. This technology produces highest quality without rendering the entire image in high definition, it only captures what the human eye can perceive.

The advances in Virtual Technology will provide engineers and designers a visual presentation of new cars, houses and factories, before they have been built. Moreover, they will also be able to experiment on the newly designed products without wrecking the physical models. The technology has indeed opened possibilities to developing new designs and the new feature will prove to be cheaper and more effective. Furthermore, the technology has eliminated the hassles of menial work. Besides, experimenting on physical models of cars and aeroplanes is an expensive affair, the VR technology has indeed eradicated this possibility.

This invention will be beneficial to buyers as well as designers. For instance, home-buyers will be able to take a tour around yet-to-be-built apartments. It will enable them to choose combinations of colours, carpets, kitchen and living room accessories, etc. It will similarly work to a car designer’s advantage.

It is however yet debatable whether the new technology has the high-end advantage it claims. Several industry observers believe “mixed” or “augmented” reality will ultimately reign. Combination of video of the real world with virtual reality images will still remain the preferred choice. More such high-end headsets also require high processing power and a strong connection to powerful computers. So there are shortcomings when customers and designers will want to walk around a big virtual boat, for instance.

The technology will only be feasible when the new VR resolution technology will not require any cables. And this when the high-speed 5G mobile connectivity comes into question. Streaming speeds 10 to 20 times faster than the existing connections, will allow high-resolution images to be beamed to the headsets wirelessly.
