Moganshan Gowin Golf Club

While enjoying a week-end away from the bustling city life of Shanghai at Naked Stable Private Reserve, we decided to explore this little known golf course close to Deqing City.

An hour and half by bullet train to shanghai, the golf course is just outside the city limits, it can be reached by both the train station and the resort in 15 minutes.

Taxi ride, return flat fare, from the resort was 200 Yuan.

The golf course was just recently completed, circa 2012, and the club house modern architecture can be clearly seen from the road with its imposing structure, the course on the other hand it’s shielded from the nearby freeway by a thick layer of trees.

The Club House.

We arrived at the club house at 7:45am, and it was almost deserted, except for the staff and a couple of other golfers.

Dropped our bags, we proceeded to collect our passbooks from reception.

The building sports a very modern design, with open space concept, high ceilings and a lot of glass and metal structures.

The checkin desk.

The staff was extremely attentive, quick in processing our check-in and kind enough to give us a tour of the restaurant and of the beautiful deck overlooking the 18th Hole.

Perfect for a nice breakfast before the round or a refreshing drink after. Or for both.

Changing rooms and showers were still being partially built, but the accessible areas were very clean, with plenty of space and all the necessary amenities. We didn't see any sauna or steam room and the whirlpool pool was half empty.

It was time to hit the course. Due to the fact that the driving range was on the other side of the freeway and that we were slightly pressed for time, we decided to skip warm up, so I’ll not be able to review it, but from what i could see, the driving range was extremely big.

Time to jump on our buggy, nice and new, very clean and with cold water and towels awaiting for us. Our caddies didn’t speak any english, not even numbers. Luckily We knew a few words (numbers in particular) so we managed to communicate, but the Bushnell RangeFinder was extremely helpful in this particular day. They knew the greens extremely well though and really helped with the putting lines.

A resting station with its traditional Chinese architecture.

The course, nestled within mountains of bamboo forests, was incredibly scenic. Plenty of water features and white sand bunkers added visual and playing complexity to each hole.

Extremely difficult pin locations plus elevation changes measuring up to 80 feet made this course a pleasure to play. I would recommend to play from the blue tees in order to fully enjoy all of the above since when starting from the white tees most of the elevation changes are noticeably smaller.

The spectacular view from the 8th-Hole with its 80 feet elevation change!

A particular mention for the 18th-Hole. A whopping 609 yards par 5 from the back tees with an abandoned quarry and the clubhouse as backdrop for the elevated green, it wrapped in the best possible way an already amazing round.

The 18th Hole green with the club house and and abandoned quarry as backdrop.

With the round over, we headed back to the club house for a nice drink on the deck overlooking the golf course. Gowin Golf Course was a fantastic surprise and I can’t wait to come back for another great round of golf.
