Thanks for your comment Beth!
Full disclosure: I’m not a fan (and have never been a fan) of Amy Schumer. I don’t think she’s funny, in fact she bothers me. I appreciate aspects of what she’s trying to do, but this piece was never about defending Schumer as an artist or a person. For me, it was about feeling frustrated by an article that seemed (to me) to be unfairly demonizing another woman, and to ask questions of other women so I could better understand the context, and Uolo’s criticisms.
The “You just don’t get it” response is exactly what I’m hoping to address here. Clearly I don’t get it, no argument there. I spent almost half of my article basically saying: “Hey I don’t get it, help me get it!” This is why I’m asking questions, I want to “get it.” I appreciate you adding to the discussion so my readers and I can gain perspective and learn about what women go through with body image!
The size inflation thing you mentioned is interesting, I hadn’t considered that before. I remember reading about how Marilyn Monroe was every man’s fantasy in the 50s, and she supposedly wore a size 12. It seems fair to say a size 12 wouldn’t be considered “Pop Idol” sexy by today’s magazine covers.
