Television Production
Television is a telecommunication medium that is used for transmitting and receiving moving images and sound. Using articles I have researched I will introduce some of the reasons why television matters. TV plays a big role all over the world; it has its positive and negative effects on society. After researching this topic I found some interesting point from various authors. Each had a different approach to why television matters. Raymond Williams author of “Television: Technology & Cultural Form” said “television was invented as a result of scientific and technical research. Its power as a medium of news and entertainment was then altered to the use of media news and entertainment. The invention of television was no single event or series of events. It depended o a complex of inventions and developments in electricity, telegraphy, photography, motion pictures, and radio.”(Williams 1974)

In the article “Television and The Social on Adolescents ” Ciacu N. & Bratu, A. (2013) a thesis developed by George Gerbner stated that TV is what developed the gun culture in America through mass media. This type of media streamed through television has generated a symbolic cultural environment that has effected negatively on young viewers. Gerbner claims that television became “a family member” to households around the country, and with its constant exposure people get addicted to it. He also stated “the leading effect of watching TV is the loyal viewers describe the world through the distorted image provided by television.”
Television is also used for sponsorships. Companies worldwide use TV as an outlet to get their product and name out to the general public. In the article “The importance of creative match in television sponsorship” Masterson, R. (2005) there are sponsors that will target a specific audience. For example cartoon channels for children will have commercials for toys such as Barbie’s and Hot Wheels, which would target young boys and girls. Beer companies will often show their ads during sporting events since people tend to associate beer with watching the game. Broadcasting is a very big business as well, it brings in billions of dollars each year which also on a rise worldwide.
As a popular cultural medium TV attempts to homogenize variety of cultures and social relations so that one program can reach as many different audiences as possible. It is also a conventional medium; its conventions suit both the audiences with their needs for familiarity and the producers. (Fiske 1987) The more target audiences TV companies reach the more money they will make leading up to the possibility of producing more shows within the network.
Television has led to an unprecedented expansion in history and science programming. (Gardam, T. 2005) Through the sources I have found in books and articles each author has explained how TV affects the world in different ways. Why does TV matter? Because it one of the main sources of information and it is one of the fastest ways the get a message across to people it is either important news or entertainment news. TV is constantly advancing as scientists find ways to make it better than before it will continue to evolve as time goes on. (Gardam, T. 2005)
