To Professor Audrey Desjardins, Professor Amy J. Ko, Professor Axel Roesler,

who inspired me to design.

00 Abstract

We live in a world where interfaces exist at different scales in our artificial reality. They evolve with technological and ideological advancement, mediating different aspects of human life.

By examining interface as a design artifact, this paper first broadens the definition of interface by addressing its socio-cultural nature. Through the lens of interface designer, the paper outlines how technological, ideological, and economic realities have shaped interface design philosophies. Finally, the paper reframes design discipline and designer practice as social interfaces, pointing to the alternative future that HCI design is moving towards.
