There is a Chinese story, conveyed to us through Marshall McLuhan. An old man is drawing water from a well. He goes down into the well with a bucket, comes out and pours the water.
A prince comes along and watches the old man labouring away. After awhile the prince speaks: “Old man, there is a device which you can use that makes this task so much easier. It is a pump: you lower it into the water, and turn the crank and it speeds the movement of the water.”
The old man looks at the prince. “I am familiar with what you speak of. However, I prefer to do this the way I am now. When one uses that device it gives one the heart of a machine.”
