Excellent points. People are awfully cavalier when it comes to history. Or I wonder if they are just ignorant to history, particularly when it comes to that region. I think everyone should take a look at Arab history back to the time of the Roman Empire. It’s fascinating, really, and geopolitically the Middle East was the center of the world when the Arabs emerged from Arabia to create an empire that stretched across the Mediterranean to borders of France.

And the Ottoman Empire was an Islamic Empire, though not ethnically Arab. It was around and aggressively involved in territorial acquisitions from about 1300 AD till the 1920's. People need to stretch their understanding of history back beyond just WWII.
