“Design & Culture”

Learning diary 2

Ilmari Tapiovaara

When I visited Ilmari Tapiovaara 100 Years Exhibition in Design Museum, Helsinki, I saw many of his chairs but I didn’t know him before actually. Ilmari Tapiovaara is a very productive designer whose works are involved with many areas such as furniture, public spaces and even heavy industrial products. He has a great impact on finnish design history like Alvar Aalto, as he did lots of projects for the society.

The chairs that designed by him are just elegant, exquisite and aesthetic. The size and rhythm of the products are naturally and perfectly balanced. I found that he did really well in dealing with the relationship between line and surface. And he enjoy using all kinds of curved surface combined with straight parts to make the objects smooth and rhythmic. By using this kind of contrast and round feeling, his designs are really lively and full.

Now I have one more designer that I admire. Really brilliant and talented works!
