HW 2— Arts 214
- In class we chose to design a gaming site where people can meet and play different types of games. In order to have an ideas of who our user are, we came up with the following questions:
Age range? live alone? (general demographic)
Access to internet?
What do you usually do for fun? (follow up — alone or w friends?)
What kind of games do you like?
How long does that kind of an activity take you?
When you are in group activities, how many people (do you like big groups or small groups — ballpark the amount)?
What makes you come back and play games again and again?
Have you ever played games that had reward systems? If so, what are they?
Chat feature? (anonymity? avatars?Etc.)
I interviewed Xiaoping, and her answers were the following:
She is 27 years old and lives with her family. She does have access to the internet. On her free times she listens to music and watches TV. She prefers small groups of people for group activities. Her favorite game is animal crossing, and she spends days playing it. What makes her come back to the game is that she can build and sell stuff. The game has a chat feature.
2. My thoughts “How to think differently about doing good as a creative person” by Omayeli Arenyeka :
This article talk about the “Savior Complex” in design, what the author calls “Creative Savior Complex”. This happens when a designer wants to do something good for people, but in reality there are other priorities that benefit him or herself. It was an interesting article because it invites creative people to be aware of their real intentions when designing something that is meant to do good for other people, because in the long run, it can hurt the people they wanted to help in the first place. This can happen when there is a lack of knowledge of the community they are tying to help or assuming what other people might need. She suggests other ways to help, like donating money to an organization that is better equipped.
