7 Days of Crazy User Acquisition of an App Startup in Singapore
We are the first english app with authentic Asian cooking content and good UI (according to the App store team). YoRipe app was two months into the launch and the numbers were growing, but slow, behind our target. So we asked ourselves how we can acquire users differently, faster and have fun at the same time! 😉
Monday, 21/10: Magic Kitchen
Have you stood in front of your fridge feeling uninspired about what you can make? We heard you.. presenting the Magic Kitchen by YoRipe.
We set up a WhatsApp chat and were delighted to receive photos of fridge and cupboard. With our 1,200+ recipe database, the Magic Kitchen recommended at least 3 recipes for each request. We exceeded that day’s user acquisition target by 20. ✔️
Tuesday, 22/10: Knock knock ✊🏼
Receiving pictures through WhatsApp chat was not good enough for us, we wanted to speak to people about their struggle. So we ventured into the Punggol residential area (we know there’s a high concentration of our user segment: young couples and families ) and knocked on doors!
There were 4 of us and we split into 2 teams, we started with 2 HDB blocks but many were not at home and those who opened for us are older than the core demography of our target users. We regrouped after an hour and decided to go to an executive condo where one of our younger power users lives.
We thought we would get to meet similar demography in this way. It started to rain when we got to the EC, but we kept going! With the team creativity and patience, we got into the condo, did a few floors and got better responses. Indeed, the demography was much more younger, families, digicode lock doors, and of course, more security in the condo.
People wanted to find more about the app and how we can help with their cooking and grocery routine. They showed us their fridge and a few were amazed that we are a born in Singapore startup!
Unfortunately we had to wrap up the good conversations quickly after we ran into the security guards of the condominium. They told us that we’d need permission from the management to carry out our experiment so we apologised and left under the heavy rain.
It was definitely a memorable experience for all of us, the encounter with the security was not pleasant but we knew hustling is never easy.
Wednesday, 23/10: Food tasting in the streets
We hosted a healthy Diwali sweets making workshop with Ambaree of @Vegan Keno at OUE Social Kitchen and we thought why not surprise the office workers around Tanjong Pagar area during lunch hour? So we went!
Initially we didn’t get much interest but after we share that it’s sugar-free, vegan and gluten-free Diwali sweets, people were curious to try! The feedback was great and we were so happy that people were taking out their phones to download YoRipe right away.
Thursday 24/10: Saying hi to neighbours around Block 71
We’re lucky that our co-working space is at Block 71 and is in the middle of the local startup scene. So it has become a routine to go to a new building each week to say hi to our neighbours and share a bit about YoRipe. This week, we went to Block 79 and had great conversations as usual! We signed up for SG Tech’s startup membership and met a healthy food delivery company for marketing collaboration.
Friday 25/10: What food freaks you out?
We all have some weird phobia for certain food and since it’s Halloween, we thought it would be fun to share..👻
Saturday 26/10: Rest and prepare for next day’s event
Sunday 27/10: Sunday Social Market at Camp Kilo
We love doing pop-ups at various markets across the island. We always meet curious and interested people who perk us up and give valuable feedback. At Camp Kilo, the vibe was relaxing and we had a great time sharing about new recipes (they are added every 2 weeks in the app) from The Meat Club and sampling Kaju Burfi (Cashew Fudge) with the crowd.
Then just as we were about to wrap up, a thunderstorm came and everyone ran indoor. Well, except the DJs. 😂
Conclusion:
We achieved 777 downloads for the week and exceeded our target! The numbers showed that our effort paid off and we also had a lot of fun trying new tactics (even under the rain!) to grow fast.
