5 reasons to start a blog TODAY

If you’ve been thinking about starting your very first blog, but have yet to make it happen, today is the day. Blogging is one of the best (and easiest!) ways to build your tribe online, grow your business, and even make a little extra cash on the side. (YES, just from blogging.)
It was my hobby for 16 years and now my business for over 4, which comes out to grand total of 20 years. (holy moly!)
When I first starting blogging it was all about sharing personal stories online, but over the past few years it’s grown into something else entirely. So today I wanted to share five reasons why YOU should get in the game and start blogging too!
1 | Blogging helps you find your people
Post-college it’s not always easy to get out and meet new people. No matter where you are in the world, blogging can help connect you with a community (or create your own) around literally any topic ever. Passionate about scuba diving? Bead making? Hedgehogs? Your people are online and just waiting to connect with you.
2 | Blogging helps you build authority
If you own any sort of business (whether that’s tangible products, digital products, or services) creating blog content is a MUST. Not only does it help to cement you as an expert in your niche, but it helps to ensure your website shows up at the top of search results. Gone are the days when you can build a three page website, launch it and forget about it. Google prioritizes websites that are updated on a regular basis and the best way to keep your website looking fresh is by publishing new blog content on a regular basis.
3 | Blogging helps you expand your reach
You can go to all the networking and community events you want, post on Facebook, and run Google ads, but nothing compares to creating your own content. Blogging puts you in control and it allows you to extend your influence to multiple networks and communities at once. Stop hoping your static website will show up in search engine results. Blogging brings more people to your website to read about you and learn from you than search engines alone ever will.
4 | Blogging helps you own your online space
Facebook and Instagram and Pinterest — they’ve all changed their algorithm over the past year to make it more challenging to get your posts in front of your people. Yes, even if they’ve liked your page and interacted with your content. And at any point they can shut down your account without reason or warning. While I’m all about using social media as a tool to connect with my audience I’m not going to put all my eggs in someone else’s basket. Creating a blog puts YOU in control.
5 | And yes, blogging helps you make a little extra cash (or a lot!)
Blogging is fun on its own, but if you got paid to do it that would be even better, right? Affiliate links, sponsored posts, webinars, advertising, digital products. Growing a blog and learning to create valuable content can open the door to multiple streams of income, some of them VERY passive.
So — what exactly should you blog about and how do you set up all the tech stuff??
