Review: I have the hardback which is 172 pages plus another 100 pages or so of footnotes (which are extensive and allow an analysis of the source material for the book) and index. The book is well-written and the chapters are generally short and focused.. I got the book as part of my study into globalization. The increasing concentration of wealth, increasingly in society’s upper 1/2% and largely in what the author characterizes as “tech oligarchs”, recreates conditions seen during feudalism’s rise and dominance during the Middle Ages.
I’ll let the author provide a response to the highly critical review that the book has received. “This is a book neither of the right nor of the left. It is an attempt to diagnose trends that are leading to a more hierarchical and stagnant society. It also stands as a warning to the global middle class.” Page vii. As a child of the middle class, I appreciate the warning. The author quotes approvingly from Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels and Mao at various points in the book so judge for yourself how broad his sources and viewpoint are.
The book uses the pre-French Revolutionary characterization of society as divided into a First Estate, a Second Estate and a Third Estate. The First Estate are the tech oligarchs, the Second Estate are what he denominates as the “clerisy”, essentially most of academia, the print and broadcast media, the entertainment industry, and those who take their guidance from these bodies and the Third Estate is everyone else. The “everyone else” is obviously a very large majority. The book seeks to motivate the Third Estate to assert its interests before neo feudalism renders it incapable of doing so. COVID (this is written in August 2020) and its negative effect on employment raises interesting questions in my mind as to whether it may have the effect of accelerating the subjection of the Third Estate to the First Estate.
California stands as an example of where neo-feudalism may lead. Do your own research on how this is working out for the non-tech oligarchs who live in California. Put aside your beliefs about what California was 20–50 years ago and see if you or your children could afford to live there now. The book argues that, just as the nobles of the Middle Ages, didn’t want their serfs to enjoy any mobility, the current tech oligarchs don’t wish their employees to have any upward mobility either.
The book looks beyond the Unites States and finds these same wealth and power concentrations in fewer and fewer hands around the world. China gets special scrutiny since its concentration of political and economic power in the hands of a few with an authoritarian power structure inspires increasing interest.
The print and broadcast media, higher education and the entertainment industry, what the book calls the “clerisy” supports the goals of the upper 1/2%, much as the Catholic Church did in supporting the nobility of the Middle Ages. The book argues that the goals of the tech oligarchs are not those of the vast majority of the Third Estate.
If you value any chance of upward social mobility or a more equitable distribution of society’s wealth, then I recommend that you read the book. You’ll probably find parts of it with which you may not agree (see the main critical review), but read the book as a whole and I think you will find the author’s arguments well supported and, at least in my case, deeply concerning.

Review: The clerisy will not like this book. That is because these are the highly paid minions of those who have the “final solution” and want to impose it on us all…. Even Lawrence Summers (economist of Obama administration) says that once people understand what the globalists plan to do they “WILL NOT GO WILLINGLY.”
What Elon Musk has just done to Twitter gives me hope of hearing the “howls of pain and suffering” of those who would support people who want to end freedom in America.
I say we should clearly identify who are the clerisy are and dislodge them from their high salaries paid to help those who would destroy what makes American so Great…..

Review: Kotkin does a great job in articulating where the US and much of the rest of the world is headed. Much of the populace senses this and this is why we have seen political backlashes in countries like the US, UK, and Australia. He says we are headed towards a new high-tech feudalism characterized by a small and wealthy aristocratic class, a priest-like intellectual class, and a vast serf-like majority which is increasingly propertyless and even homeless.
He calls these classes the Oligarchy, the Clerisy, and the Yeomanry. But I think five classes better describe the situation. The top class is composed of wealthy billionaire oligarchs epitomized by Wall Street and Silicon Valley. But these oligarchs can hardly maintain their privileged positions without help from Washington DC. These politicians comprise a second class which is more interested in power and satisfied to be just millionaires.
The third class is the intellectual class which includes journalists, professors, and entertainers. They maintain their privileged positions and incomes by serving as the propaganda department for the oligarchs and their supporters in government. What Kotkin calls the yeomanry really comprises two classes. The mainly property-owning middle class is the main target of the above classes and was behind the political peasant-like rebellion which brought Trump to power. Below that is the class composed of workers who must rely on some form of welfare and the non-workers who rely completely on welfare.
The decline of America and the middle class began in the 1970s when America suffered economic setbacks with the biggest being the Arab Oil Embargo which quadrupled oil prices. A major recession followed and companies began looking for ways to lower costs. At about the same time a high-tech revolution began in Silicon Valley. This revolution was soon used to enable the outsourcing of American jobs to cheap overseas labor. This was not enough for the oligarchy and the importation of cheap foreign labor skyrocketed.
The resulting computerization of the economy enabled smaller and smaller groups of people to control larger and larger amounts of the economy, leading to the current crop of high-tech billionaires. This development has intensified for about four decades where real wages have been stagnant for the declining middle class while costs such as housing, health, and education have skyrocketed. Many have fallen into the underclass of low wages and welfare.
The three aristocratic classes have responded to this situation by advocating environmentalism and multiculturalism, which benefits the rich, and promoting the current underclass grievance culture, which takes attention away from elite privileges. Their main solution is a universal basic income, which is just more welfare, to appease the masses while the top classes gain more wealth and power.
Any attempt by the middle class to defend itself is met with the accumulated power of the privileged classes epitomized by the media and the Deep State. This can be seen in the non-stop attempts to remove Trump and reverse the 2016 election.
