Hillary Clinton is an American politician, lawyer, and diplomat who served as the First Lady of the United States from 1993 to 2001, as a U.S. Senator from New York from 2001 to 2009, as the Secretary of State from 2009 to 2013, and as the Democratic nominee for President in the 2016 election.
Born on October 26, 1947, in Chicago, Illinois, Clinton attended Wellesley College and Yale Law School. After law school, she worked as a staff attorney for the Children’s Defense Fund before serving as a lawyer for the Rose Law Firm in Arkansas. In 1978, she became the First Lady of Arkansas when her husband, Bill Clinton, was elected governor.

In 1992, Bill Clinton was elected President of the United States, and Hillary Clinton became the First Lady. During her time in this role, she advocated for healthcare reform and women’s rights, among other issues. In 2000, she was elected to the U.S. Senate from New York, becoming the first woman to be elected to the Senate from that state.
After serving as a U.S. Senator for eight years, Clinton was appointed as Secretary of State by President Barack Obama in 2009. During her time in this role, she worked to strengthen U.S. alliances and promote democracy and human rights around the world. She also played a key role in negotiating the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in 2012.
