Oguchi no makami is a sacred creature for Japanese society and Shinto beliefs because it has an important role in human life in ancient times. It is believed that Makami has a role in protecting the people’s agriculture from attacks by wild animals such as wild boar and deer.

Apart from that role, Makami is also believed to be able to understand words and the nature of a person. This creature is also believed to protect the good and punish the evil.

Makami is also believed to protect humans from trouble caused by fire and robbery. Basically this god has a good character even though there is a belief that this creature has eaten a lot of humans so that it gains strength.

Japanese people and adherents of Shinto teachings believe that Makami is a sacred being or god who inhabits the mountains. It is believed to honor Makami, that ancient people in Japan did not dare venture too far into the mountains. Apart from coming from the region, it is possible that the name Yamato also has something to do with a prince from the Empire of Japan during the Yamato Dynasty, namely Yamato Takeru. There is a folklore that tells that Prince Yamato Takeru once got lost in a forest.
