Where do we start…

Firstly, we are Shamar and Jessica we are a couple of creatives who are a couple that were broke as shit and expecting our son, Harper-Ryan. We were at our wits end in terms of employment opportunities and had to make money because we were expecting. It was a trying time especially since everything that we were trying seemingly fell flat.

It wasn’t until that final disappointment/failure of securing a job that we decided to delve full-fledged into creating something that we both loved. It was then that XY The Brand was created.

XY came out of a necessity to provide for our family and to create something that can last and be passed down to Harper-Ryan so he does not necessarily have to go through all the struggles that his parents had to endure.

When we started this brand we had little to no funds but what we did have was drive, ambition and creativity. We spent about $30 to purchase 3 dad caps of which when we were done dabbling, only one was a success. That one cap was reluctantly sold to one of our friends. We never intended for that particular hat to be sold as we were experimenting; however he bought it, wore it and from there it took off. Someone saw him in it and he told them where he got it from and that person bought several caps from us. That person in turn put us on to some other people who bought from us repeatedly. It was from there that we started to grow organically.

We didn’t have any machinery, any heat press machines or garment printers, all we had was some fabric paints, blank hats, paint brushes, sponges and our God given talents to create, curate and hand paint ALL our designs.

Growing along the way as a family and in a relationship was hard and continued to be hard due to bills and other responsibilities; nevertheless we supported each other and continued to push through. It is today that we have an artist shop on the online platform Threadless.com where all our designs can be seen on apparel and accessories.

We had to stay strong to make it this far and we still haven’t made it anywhere as yet but we continue to strive as we have bigger goals in mind, those are: to make XY a global brand; to make our son proud of his parents while we show him that hard work and perseverance really pays; to help others get their dreams out and to continue enjoying what we do every single day.
