I think it varies depending on family and other circumstances. I live at home rent free because I’m a full time student who specifically chose the program I’m in because I knew I could stay at home for free/ my parents allowed me to stay for free. Otherwise, at any other program I picked, I’d be living in and paying rent in a super expensive city on top of ridiculous tuition costs. If I were to offer my parents money, they’d force it back into my hand. Every now and then I’ll bring home their favorite dessert or make a meal for them, etc. and k also keep a super low profile (I clean up after myself, I’m home pretty much only to sleep, and am very quiet when I’m there — not that I need to be but because it feels like I should compensate in someway for being an old 20+ living at home for free!)
