People who follow the Zen Buddhist style use a special type of meditation that focuses on diaphragmatic breathing, which is the expanding and contracting of the abdomen. Zen monks are known for doing this practice over and over again. It causes short-term increases in body temperature and blood alkalinity. A study was done to see what effect Zen meditation had on people who had been introduced to drugs used for medical purposes. Over the course of ten minutes, the individuals practiced this style of meditation. The results showed that heart rate variability and cardiorespiratory functions got a lot better, even in people who had a heart donation in the past.
