I’m a third generation atheist. My parents don’t believe in God and have no respect for organised religion, and their parents are almost as hawkish. In my country, religion (like anything else that claims authority over people) has historically been treated with suspicion and irreverence. I’m very lucky to have been given room to keep secrets and have ideological freedoms, and I’m sorry that you (and so many others) weren’t given the same.
