Las Vegas Company Uses Family Dog as Part of the Hiring Process

Sadie, a Wheaten terrier, gives the phrase“the sniff test” a whole new meaning. The owner of a Las Vegas air conditioning and plumbing concern, Goettl Air Conditioning and The Sunny Plumber, uses the family dog Sadie in its hiring process.

The technicians have to pass a personality test, drug test, background test and skills test before the company will hire them. But they have to pass the Sadie test too.

Sadie likes you or she doesn’t. If she doesn’t like you, no hire. If she really likes you, want to do customer service?

Currently 220 of the company’s 300 employees here in Vegas are “Sadie-certified.”

As Kenneth Goodrich, owner of both the company and Sadie, points out, he is sending his technicians into people’s homes. Homes of seniors. Single women. Children. These customers now somehow feel safe to let this stranger in the house because the person ringing the doorbell is Sadie-certified.

Personally, I think it’s a brilliant move. Bensley, my Labrodoodle, is a trained threat dog. I learned how to prompt him into action. But I don’t have to, because he knows who’s a threat and who isn’t long before I figure it out. He just knows.

I want to introduce him to Sadie.

P.S. That’s Bensley at threat dog training.
