AI Institute Shapes Future AND focuses on benefits to humanity
Cambridge University has established the Institute for Technology and Humanity, a new center for artificial intelligence (AI) and technology with a primary focus on ensuring that the rapid advancements in AI benefit humanity. The institute aims to facilitate a deeper understanding of the dual nature of AI as a “double-edged sword” and work towards minimizing potential technological risks.
Dr. Stephen Cave, the director of the institute, emphasized the importance of learning from history and leveraging technological advancements for the well-being of humanity. He acknowledged the positive impact of past technological transformations on human life, such as increased incomes and life expectancy, but also highlighted the significant costs associated with these advancements.
Dr. Cave expressed concern about the current pace and scale of technological development, suggesting that society may be complacent about potential threats to our way of life. He stressed the need to take seriously the possibility of technology causing instability, including the collapse of democratic systems and the risk of war.
The Institute for Technology and Humanity brings together researchers from diverse fields, including historians, philosophers, computer scientists, and robotics experts. Its collaborative approach aims to address the ethical dimensions of AI and other technological developments.
Current projects at the institute include the development of design toolkits for ethical AI, computer vision systems for enhancing safety in self-driving cars, and research on the impact of volcanoes on global communications systems. The institute also focuses on lessons learned from the Covid-19 pandemic, the potential misuses of generative AI, and the development of emotion-enhanced AI.
Dr. Cave emphasized that disruptive technologies like AI are inherently dual-edged, and their outcomes are not predetermined. The institute’s mission is to proactively shape a path towards more desirable futures by conducting research and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration.
Cambridge University’s vice-chancellor, Prof Deborah Prentice, praised the institute for rising to the challenge of ensuring that human technologies align with human capacities and needs. The institute’s holistic approach reflects a commitment to addressing the ethical, social, and technological dimensions of AI to create a positive impact on society.
