The importance of homework for students

The learnt is a student’s judgement, especially in the lives of students , don’t forget to given the homework by the teacher. Sometimes the teacher give the homework have to benefits.

I want to tell you about my story when I grade 3 senior high school , maybe can for example :

From my experience, my math teacher always given me and my friends the homework every lesson. And this homework not only 1or 5 number but to much .

When my teacher given homework definitely always checked it. If my teacher know, the students not doing the homework so my teacher will be give punishment like rework that the homework as much as 10 papers.

And also my math teacher definately point or alternately forword to do the homework. But my teacher want to understand the students how to do it .

From this my story, actually the teacher want to see our intention do this the homework. And also, the teacher neet to see our discipline in finished to do this the homework and see being responsible from the student and make the student understand the material.

But never also giving this the homework can make the student confused because don’t understand the material, and less time needed for do the homework.

My opinian about the importance of homework for student have positive and negative benefits, if the homework don’t do on time so will give negetive thing to the student. And make the student hate that the lesson and not listen the teacher when the teacher explain the material.

If see the opinion other person in the internet,

Homework is one of the instruments used by teachers in learning. Homework helps students to know, have skills, and understand what they are learning. Through the provision of homework to students, it is expected that the process of achieving learning objectives will run both ways, namely at school and at home.

The homework was first introduced by Roberto Nevilis. Roberto first created homework for his students in Venice, Italy in 1095. As a teacher, Robert wants his students to do assignments that can be done at home so that parents have guidance on what to teach their children at home. Initially homework was given to naughty students as punishment, but seeing the enormous benefits of homework then it was given to all students. This phenomenon of homework spread throughout Europe and even to America and Indonesia.

on the other side too,

Educators in the United States are still debating the benefits of giving homework. However, Prof. Harris Cooper from Duke University as reported by The Washington Post, who once said that there was no relationship between academic achievement and homework, other than reading, in elementary school students, now began to change his mindset. This time Cooper said something different.

He stated, there was evidence that students in grades 2 through 5 were better at tests, when they did homework with basic skills directly related to the test. Cooper, who is also a psychologist and Director of the Duke’s Program in Education, said high school students should not spend more than two hours every night struggling with books.

While students in middle class should stop when they have studied for 90 minutes. The average elementary school child does homework 15–60 minutes. While high school students complete homework can take up to a matter of hours in one night.

How do parents get their children to do homework comfortably and easily?

According to Psychologist Marie Hartwell Walker, Ed.D, parents need to continue to supervise. To help children effectively, parents need to be committed to the process. If when you were a child, you became a successful student, there is no harm in channeling long-standing enthusiasm for children’s tasks.

However, if you are having a hard time at school and don’t like homework, show the change in behavior that you experience with the child. Give the child a second chance if he experiences the same thing.

Try creating this time every day. However, also consider the child’s needs. Some children feel better doing homework once they get home, because they can still follow the rhythm of the school. There is also a need for a long time before he is able to concentrate on homework.

Parents also have to accompany the child to make homework. It’s not enough just to brag about asking a child to finish his homework. You should be next to the child when he makes homework.

The teacher also needs to know what the child is doing and what the child does not know.

They can only find out if they see the work and correct it when something goes wrong. It could be that, as a parent, you want to help your child get good grades.

Benefits according to internet opinion are:

Do homework = escape punishment

In Indonesia and in many other countries, not doing homework means being prepared to receive a variety of penalties, ranging from being dried in the field, standing outside the classroom, to having to run around the field.

Homework helps report cards

The teacher will usually give a value for our homework. So doing homework means directly increasing our academic value.

If you do not do it, it means getting a value of 0 and will greatly harm the report card value later

Increase readiness to face the world of work

The purpose of education is one of them is to prepare the mental, mindset, and discipline that are needed when entering the workforce. In the world of work there are 2 things that will not be separated, namely responsibility and deadlines. Without homework, those two important things will be very difficult to teach to a student.

Therefore, as someone who wants to have the ability to be responsible and meet deadlines, doing homework is a must.

Methods of improving academic performance

Data collected by various educational organizations around the world find the fact that the amount of homework and the time spent doing homework is directly proportional to student performance. That is, in countries with education using homework that is “overwhelming” turns out to produce students with high levels of performance and ability to understand lessons.

Means of training and learning

By doing homework, it turns out we:

- train our time management more wisely

- trains us to independently seek information and solutions to a problem

- doing homework helps us learn more than can be taught in school

Increase quality time with family

Many homework are very difficult to do alone. But we still need to do it in order to establish communication with parents about what we are learning in school.

Doing homework becomes a booster when lazy to study

By doing homework automatically we will be considered to be learning by parents, so they will not be scolded by them.

the importance of giving homework not only has advantages but also the pros and cons of some countries prohibiting homework giving is certainly welcomed by students and parents. Because it can reduce the learning burden of children and he can have more play time or do other activities.

The following is the full explanation.

1. Homework makes children vulnerable to obesity

A study states, children who spend 30 minutes or more every night to do homework, have a high stress level. Hormones released by the body when stress triggers excessive appetite. In addition, homework also makes a child’s physical activity reduced, so the risk of obesity tends to be high.

2. Physical problems

Research at Stanford University reveals that too much homework in teens triggers stress and makes children sleep deprived. This can trigger health problems such as depression, decreased immune system, traffic accidents, drug consumption, and even suicide.

3.Children do’nt have more free time with family

If you use a simple time calculation, then children who are not burdened with homework to do at home have more time to gather with family. by using a simple logic of time for example a child goes to school at 8 am to 2 pm, after coming home from school usually the child spends time eating, napping and playing with his friend until the afternoon and if a person is given homework then automatically the remaining time at night will used to do homework but if students are not given homework it will make more time to gather with the family and this will further strengthen the inner bond between child with mother and father.

Elimination of homework for students in Indonesia

In Indonesia, the abolition of homework for students has actually begun to be applied. Reporting from the Kompas page, Purwakarta Regent Dedi Mulyadi made a new breakthrough by giving rules prohibiting teachers from giving homework to school students as stipulated in the Purwakarta Regent Circular Letter No 421.7 / 2014 / Disdikpora. This letter, signed on September 1, 2016, was also socialized to education implementers such as teachers and school principals in the Purwakarta area.

Pak Dedi adopted this policy because all this time he considered that the homework given to students was mostly in the form of academic material which was not much different from what had been taught at school. Therefore, it is expected that the role of the students’ homework assignments can be more applicable by replacing homework in the form of productive creative work in order to stimulate and foster the potential, interests of learners, rather than putting a burden on their students.

The policy made by the Purwakarta Regent was also appreciated by Muhadjir Effendy, Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia. Even Pak Muhadjir has the discourse of wanting to continue that step into a national rule.
