This sentence is a bit of a cliché, but its problem is it misses the point. You shouldn’t treat other people like you would like to be treated.

You should treat other people like THEY would like to be treated. The first sentence tells a man to treat a woman with the same flawed manhood expectations he projects unto himself. The second tells him to listen to the woman, and then to treat her accordingly.

It works outside gender also.
