Go Pokemon Go: AR Tipping point and hope for Obesity?
Every new technology needs to have a ‘Tipping point’, one moment that will create an event that will make the technology accessible to the ‘Mass Market’. I believe that the landing on the moon as a “Live event” was Tipping moment for Television, and Suzan Boyle and ‘Gangnam style’ for Youtube. ‘Pokemon Go’, the new AR App might be the Tipping point for Augmented Reality.
We have been hearing about AR for years. But the gross data of the App that was launched a month ago and already has couple of million downloads shows that this App is probably the most successful AR App until now, one that will explain what is “Augmented Reality” to audience who not necessarily read Techcrunch.
Looking at Pokemon Go success, it seems that AR (and later VR and MR) might be the new cure for Generation Z, the generation that used to do everything from their screen. AR make them use this screen to move around, go and exercise and move their body. While obesity is certainly is all ages problem, Generation Z was raised with screens and the believe that everything can be done with a swipe. I think that AR can take that screen and make it their gateway to the real world.
