This article introduces kanji structures related to reading and speaking.

These kanji look very similar. Note the differences.

These are all basic kanji that appear in N5, so do your best to learn them.

How to memorize the kanji means ‘read’.

① is a simple kanji meaning ‘to say’, and also it is a radical called ‘gomben’.

② is a cross.

③ is a horizontal line.

④ is a radical called ‘wakammuri’. It looks similar to katakana ワ(wa).

⑤ is a katakana ル(ru).

How to memorize the kanji means ‘talk’.

① is a radical called ‘gommben’.

② is a katakana ‘ノ’(no).

③ is a cross.

④ is a katakana ‘ロ’(ro).

話 = 言 + ノ + 十 + ロ

How to memorize the kanji ‘語’.

① is a radical called ‘gonmben’.

② is a simple kanji means ‘five’ (reads ‘go’).

③ is a katakana ‘ロ’(ro).

語 = 言 + 五 + ロ

The kanji 話 is often used when you mean ‘talking or speaking’.

The kanji 語 is often used in idioms.
