Once you let yourself believe it, the words will come.

You’ll say it in your head first. The image of your loved one will appear in a moment of reflection. In your mind, you’ll zoom in on their face. You’ll say it there for the first time.

I love you.

Love is your emotional response to your values in another. It’s recognizing what you want, personified.

Have you wondered at the meaning of life?

The meaning of life is meaning.

Love is the center of meaning. When we peer inside of objects and people, and think about what they represent to us, what’s left is meaning. So dig. Experience meaning. And you’ll experience love.

Luckily, it works both ways.

You can feel it first, before you recognize precisely what it is you love, and what the meaning is. And this route may be more successful.

So when you feel it, don’t wait. Let the words walk out. Maybe, just maybe, you should say it (on the inside) before you feel it. You’ll see why…

Every “I love you” will draw out another “I love you.” Every time you say it, like the holiest of prayers, it will become more true. Who you love will become more of what you love.

“I love you” will draw you out. Your mind will be drawn toward exploration of the feeling. You’ll step into more reflection and delve into meaning.

And if you find that you were right to feel it — if the meaning you found is true to you, you’ll find yourself saying it again.

“I love you.”

It’s a loop. It’s creating the truth. It’s self-reinforcing. It’s love.

On your wedding day, Joe, I wish you a life filled with meaning. Reinforce — kiss, hug, hold, speak it— often.
