Food Chronicles : Pizzas in Delhi

From Joey’s eternal love for pizzas to the mildly annoying but omnipresent ”Pizza is my bae” on tees , pizzas have travelled a long way. When ancient Greeks ,Romans and Egyptians were eating flatbreads ,they had no idea that they would create a dish with so many regional variations but loved across age, gender and status.

The modern pizza originated on the streets of Naples as a tasty necessity for the working class. They lived outdoors and those who didn’t, resided in one room houses. Pizzas/ flatbreads with toppings solved the need for economical food which could be eaten quickly.

And an amazing thing about pizza is its adaptability to whichever region it visits and adopts. Be it the deep dish cheesy Chicago style pizza , the classic Neapolitan tomato based pizza , the classic pepperoni or the dreaded Hawaiian pineapple pizza.

And infact India has introduced paneer pizzas for the vegetarian aficionados. My personal favourite though is a classic Margherita pizza. It is my personal hack that if a restaurant does not get that pizza right , it is highly likely that it shall disappoint on other bases as well. Pun intended.

Though Dominoes and Pizza Hut have dominated pizza eating dynamics by optimising deliveries. It helps students and office party organisers. And now we associate pizza with delivery. There is even a porn genre featuring a pizza delivery boy.

So much for cultural growth through pizzas.

But once in a while, one should visit the restaurants and have pizza in peace. So I have prepared a list of good places to have pizzas in Delhi. These might help you out on dates, calm me time or even a food spree.

Keeping that in mind and considering the fact that I have strayed off for long here you go :

  1. Leo’s Artisan Pizza, Vasant Vihar : Named after the owner’s dog , this place specialises in its authentic European style pizzas. Its pizzas are distinct in a way that they are soupy and cheese melts in your mouth. Their breads are delicious too. Their Margherita is just very appealing. Also it is a pet friendly place, one of the few in Delhi.

2. Big Chill ,Khan Market- This is one of the most popular Italian eateries in Delhi, though more famous for their pastas and dessert. But their thin crust pizzas are delicious too. And they have a large number of pizzas available here. Though Big Chill has branches across Delhi , I would advise people to visit the Khan Market branch. The place might be a bit on the higher side economically so choose your pizzas wisely.

Suryavanshi pizza XD

3. Caffe Tonino , CP

It is my personal favourite because of the calm and relaxing sitting and their Italian style non tadka pizzas. The cheese oozes out of the pizzas and the place does a soothing good coffee too.

Tonino’s soft ambience is tailor made for dates and would be a nice place to bring someone to talk. (Not that I have been here on one ) They have candle lit dinners in evening , though you should confirm with the restaurant about that first. The only issue I have is the lack of options of pizzas to choose from.

But this is a wonderful place and I would gladly recommend it to young ,old and jaded people.

Caffe Mocha and Margherita, a potent duo.

4.Tossin , Gurgaon , Noida sector 50 , Safdarjung , GK-2 and Punjabi Bagh:

This place was the brain child of Rohit Narang and his co partner Honey Mehta. Tossin specialises in “Gourmet Pizzas” with interesting toppings. They let you experiment a lot and you can even create your personally curated pizzas.

Tossin does deliveries too ,so can be a great place for ordering for house parties or general Netflix oriented gluttony.

For people who like spicy food , try their Peri Peri pizza though fair warning it is spicy.

5. More than Honourable mentions

These are several places which serve very good pizzas but I didn’t write them separately because I did not want to make the list too long. Netflix has taught us that too many choices can be bad too.

  • Pizza Express , Sector 18 Noida /Ambience Mall / Select City Walk(extensive choices of pizzas , try their Romani pizzas , It is very popular in Mumbai too)
  • Fat Lulu’s Pizza , SDA market /GK-1 /Lajpat Nagar/Select City Walk/Ambience Mall, Vasant Kunj( great selection of pizzas , Try Rustico or the Brooklyn (pesto based pizza))
  • Try BBQ pizza at Smokey,Khan market
