Hi Claire!
I just finished reading this amazing speech by the mayor of New Orleans, Mitch Landrieu, and was truly moved by. It also made me think of your story and your willingness to share it, and by sharing it, bringing to light a dark chapter in American history. I had no idea about some of the history of Mississippi after the Civil War; you helped me understand that a bit better. With Mayor Landrieu’s brave speech and the removal of the “Lost Cause” statues, is seems that there is hope for a more unified, loving America. Sharing your story is part of that hope; you reaching out to Carlos is part of the healing process. I hope that you have a chance to read Mitch Landrieu’s beautiful words and that they will inspire you to keep sharing your story as a part of the process of healing and wholeness that will lead to a nation of which it can truly be said “out of many we are one”.
