Lubricants in UAE

Lubricants in UAE play a very important role in industry. These substances which reduce friction and dissipate heat are used between contact surfaces of moving parts. As friction develops when two parts move against each other at high speed, a lot of heat is generated which can wear them down ultimately. Introducing lubricants between the two parts will ease out the heat and prevent the machinery from breaking down and save a lot of money on repair and purchase of new equipment. Application of lubricants ensures the smooth running of the machinery and extending their operational lifetime. These substances are also used in heating or cooling the surfaces, carry away contaminants from surfaces, transfer heat, provide wear protection, transmit power etc.

Lubricants in UAE are also termed as ‘heat transfer liquids’ as they dissipate heat from moving surfaces of a machine and also in cooling down the parts. There are many types of lubricants that are available in nature or processed synthetically with each of them having their own application. Basically, lubricants are classified into three types — liquids, semi-solids and solids.

Lubricants in UAE: They are usually called as ‘oils’. Some of the commonly used liquid lubricants are motor oils, turbine oils, gear oils, marine oils. Liquid lubricants are poured between machine parts and form a smooth wet layer which reduces friction. The liquid lubricant reduces the wear and tear with its protective coating and also can act effectively as a coolant. Liquid Lubricants in UAE can also be used to wash away dirt from machine parts by adding detergent agents in them.

Semi-solid lubricants: Commonly called as ‘grease’, semi-solid lubricants consist of oil and a thickening agent. Semi-solid lubricants have a high initial viscosity and are used mainly as sealants. Grease or semi-solid lubricants are used when there lubrication is not that frequently necessary. They are also used in applications where liquid lubricant would not stay in position.

Solid lubricants: These types of lubricants are used when both liquid and semi-solid lubricants are inadequate. Solid lubricants are known to withstand high temperatures well over 300 °C. The most commonly used solid Lubricants in UAE are graphite and molybdenum disulphide. Apart from these, there are other solid lubricants like boron nitride, talc, polytetrafluorethylene (PTFE), cerium fluoride, calcium fluoride, tungsten disulphide etc.

They are several kinds of lubricants available in the commercial market with each of them having a specific purpose or suited to different machinery. Some of the key characteristics a good lubricant must possess are high boiling point, low freezing point, high viscosity index, corrosion prevention, thermal stability, demulsibility and hydraulic stability. Additives are also added to lubricants to enhance their properties.

Applications of Lubricants in Emirates: The key functions of Lubricants in UAE are separating moving parts in a machinery, reducing friction between parts, transfer heat from surfaces, washing away contaminants and debris, transmitting power, provide wear protection, preventing corrosion and rust, sealants for gases, stop the risk of smoke and fire which can cause damage to machinery, accidents etc.
