How does the FIFA Club World Cup work?

The format of the FIFA Club World Cup has changed several times during its history. The current format features four stages:

  1. The play-off round: the winner of the Oceanian Champions League will compete with the host nation’s national league champion.
  2. The quarter-final round:
  • The winner of the play-off round will face the African Champions League (CAF Champions League) winner.
  • The AFC Champions League winner meets the CONCACAF Champions League winner.

3. The semi-final round: The two winners from the quarterfinal round compete with the UEFA Champions League and South America’s Copa Libertadores winners respectively.

4. The final: The two winners from the previous round join the final to determine the eventual winner who crowns the FIFA Club World Cup title.

Which nation will host the FIFA Club World Cup 2021?

The FIFA Club World Cup 2021 was postponed due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. It is now scheduled to take place in the United Arab Emirates and will be held between 3 and 12 February 2022.

The specific place for the FIFA Club World Cup 2021 is in Abu Dhabi. All the games will take place in two stadiums Mohammed bin Zayed Stadium, Al Nahyan Stadium.

How many and which teams qualify for FIFA World Cup 2021?

There are seven teams that qualified for the FIFA World Cup 2021.

Al Jazira will join the first round as the champion of the host nation’s national league, or the 2020–21 UAE Pro League, along with Auckland City from OFC.

Auckland City was not the winner of the OFC Champions League as this tournament wasn’t canceled due to the strong impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Australian club was nominated by the OFC Executive Committee based on several factors, including their performances and ranking in recent seasons.

There are three clubs that automatically got their berth to the second round, including Monterrey as the winners of the 2021 CONCACAF Champions League, Al Ahly as the winners of the 2020–21 CAF Champions League, and Al Hilal as the winner of the 2021 AFC Champions League.

The semi-finals already feature two clubs, which are Chelsea as the winners of the 2020–21 UEFA Champions League and Palmeiras as the 2021 Copa Libertadores champion.
