Think CodeNEXT is dead? Think again.

The special interests that worked hand-in-hand with the City of Austin to craft the comprehensive land-development rewrite may decide to bury the “CodeNEXT” brand, but they are very likely to repackage the plan’s policies and then try to force them onto our community under a different name.

This November’s “Proposition J” ballot measure is a solution for that problem. When it comes to local land use, it gives voters something they’ve never had before: a choice.

Proposition J calls for a waiting period and public vote before “the next CodeNEXT” or any other comprehensive revision to Austin’s land-development code becomes legally effective. Passing Proposition J will ensure that comprehensive rewrites of Austin’s land-development laws reflect the values of our community, not those of the special interests or the City of Austin’s staff. Proposition J gives everyday Austinites a seat at the table.

Here are three big reasons every Austinite should vote YES on Proposition J this November:

Proposition J promotes democracy. Everyday Austinites don’t need city staffers or special interests to tell them what’s best for this community and its families. We vote on bonds, charter amendments, and complicated ballot measures all the time, and we deserve just as much of a say on the adoption of comprehensive land-code revisions. They can have an even bigger impact on our neighborhoods, homes, and lives.

Proposition J will help keep Austin affordable, diverse, and livable. CodeNEXT had strong support from big land developers, but it was rejected by the community because it would have worsened all of the problems it was supposed to solve. The special interests that profit from Austin’s development must be kept in check, and Proposition J gives local residents an opportunity to do just that.

Proposition J won’t slow down incremental changes to Austin’s land code. If voters pass Proposition J, the City of Austin will still have the authority to improve its permitting process and reform our land-development laws in incremental ways, and to do so without delay. Proposition J applies only to comprehensive revisions of Austin’s land code, like CodeNEXT and any plan similar to it.
