Great article. I believe that people call it a “selfish” act because it decreases their own filling of guilt that they didn’t help that person. While it is difficult to ask for help, we should offer it before being asked. Simple “How ARE you” to a family member, friend, colleague or a stranger — may open a flood of emotions, tears or shouting, which are all dependent on the person’s learned reactions. That’s when listening, kind words or even a hug could offer a different outcome.
