The why and how of Standardising Power BI Report Design

Design - is the art or process of deciding how something will look or work.

It’s tempting to associate data visualisation with the computer and internet era, but one of my favourite data visualisation is the “map of Napoleon’s disastrous Russian campaign of 1812”. It was produced in 1869 by Charles Minard.

I used to feel strongly that the goal of all reports is to combine a good data story with some well designed data visuals. Over the years, I’ve noticing many visually pleasing reports actually contain major data flaws (mine included). The counter argument towards a more balanced approach start to grow on me. While part of me still rejects standardised report design (fun killer!), there are a few practical reasons for doing so. This article focuses on the following elements:

  1. why standardise report design
  2. what are the areas of opportunity
  3. how to roll out standardisation
