Before this course I had no design philosophy. I designed a website for my family’s pizza store that has essential information, but looks horrendous. This course has not only taught me basic design principles, but different ways to create ideas. This course has exposed me to different frameworks that will be useful to know down the road. For example, InVision is a superb prototyping tool that I will continue to use as I prototype different designs. If I ever want to create a chat bot for my family’s pizza shop I will be using flowxo. Even thought it was very…

Demo video of our movie recommendation service.

Ideation

To begin, our group started ideating. We came up with many different ideas but decided to go with one of the simpler ones due to our time constraints. Our ideas were to make a video game that is controlled by the user’s face, recommend a youtube video based on displayed emotions, recommend a movie based on displayed emotions, and recommend a product based on displayed emotions. We decided to implement a service that gives the user a movie recommendation based on the displayed emotion. We decided to implement this idea because we thought…

Demo video of our chatbot.

Ideation

Our ideation process was a group effort. We kept spitballing different ideas that we wanted our chatbot to talk about. We ended up with 4 ideas that we needed cut down to 1 idea: Racket is a good language, Foisie is a good building, we need less gun control, and women shouldn’t have rights. As you can see we were being the devils advocate for some of these topics. As a group, we chose to make the chatbot preach gun rights. …

I was on the clear communication team and we were responsible for generating three different perspectives on the same dataset. We chose to describe the energy use of the United States throughout the years. The dataset included many different fuel types ranging from coal to electricity. Whether the fuel source was imported, exported, consumed, or produced. The years that the data recorded were 1949 all the way to 2014. The units of energy were in quadrillion BTUs. You can view our graphs here. For the persausive data visualization go here.

Our group was tasked with redesigning a mobile website with a specific demographic in mind. Our assigned demographic was 20–30 year old entrepreneurs looking to start a company. We were given a choice between three websites to redesign: a library website, a maker-space website, and a tech incubator website. We chose the tech incubator site because that site offers what a young entrepreneur looking to start a company needs. It offers offices, a maker-space, and many services that a startup entrepreneur can take advantage of. The website before our redesign included a lot of useless information that took up too…

Screenshot of the WPI BannerWeb site

I chose this site because it is a good example of a designer not using design principles. The audience of this site is members of the WPI community. The functions of this site is to log you into BannerWeb. People use this site when they want to log into BannerWeb to access their information.

Contrast

Contrast is used throughout this site but it is not enough contrast to look good. Different colors are used at times, but the font size is still the same as the text surrounding it, which makes it look as though it is not contrasted enough. Another…

Screenshot of undergraduate admissions site

I will be analyzing the WPI undergraduate admissions website for good design techniques. I chose this site because this is what students interested in WPI will look at in order to decide if the school is the right choice for them. The audience of this site is prospective WPI students. They are using it for learning what WPI has to offer them. They are most likely using it when they are searching for colleges to attend. Since prospective students are using this site to learn about WPI, it needs to be designed well to keep students interested in WPI.
