Having read the book, “Gene”, by Siddhartha Mukherjee, I have discovered the surprising similarity among Genomics, Bruce Lee, and AI. Let me share this with the audience.

First of all, let me say that Professor Mukherjee is a great writer. There are few people out there who are true scientists themselves and is also able to present a complex scientific idea to regular people like you and me. The book “Gene” by Professor Mukherjee is the book worth reading perhaps for everyone. The book introduces a serious of story-like yet scientific discoveries and documentation and presents in front of readers a image-like details. From Darwin to Gelsinger, Genomics study not only have a long history of time span but it also revolutionizes the field of statistics if not the founder of modern statistics and data science, which a few people realize.

The most famous picture, in my opinion, is the following cycle presented in his book. In the beginning of the book, the author only introduces Genes, Proteins, and Information. It is not so much of a circle if not a triangle. After decades of study and expansion of the scientific discovery in Genomics, the cycle is filled with RNAs, Organisms, Environments, and other knowledge. It comes down to two routes: discovery of human body itself, and engineering advanced mutations from what we discovered. It is an ongoing fight with losses and success. We have come a long way and we have a long way to go.

For other information, the book is doing a better job than me. However, one thing which leads to the next section is the potential combination of engineering and human body. The notion of “genetically engineered to be more advanced” seems to be near us in the foreseeable future. Humans are having less diseases and better immune system due to our discovery of vaccine. Animals are “equipped” with more functions and extra organs from cross-species genetic experiments.

A notable scholar and practitioner in martial art, Bruce Lee, introduced similar concepts decades ago. His famous “Be Water” quote is highly referenced when it comes to martial arts. But it doesn’t necessarily stop here. The notion of “be water” is explained in details in the interview. From Lee’s point of view and I quote, it’s a combination of both natural instinct and control. You are to combine the two in harmony. Not…if you have one to the extreme, you’ll be very unscientific. If you have another to the extreme, you become, all of a sudden, a mechanical man…no longer a human being. So it is a successful combination of both, so therefore, it’s not pure naturalness, or unnaturalness. The ideal is unnatural naturalness, or natural unnaturalness.

Lee’s philosophy leads to what I promote in data science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. You would start with flipping through machine learning books and learn about how to use functions and packages in R and Python. Then you are merely equipped with the rules. It is as if you are given a fancy calculator. In simple, you know the following graph. You are given or you collect some data and you use some AI to figure out some pattern in that data. Perhaps you would run some back-test to check the robustness and you will have some results.

The above procedure is a unit of learning node in a highly complex structure. Let us call the above procedure a star, i.e. “*”. When you get more advanced, you would have to go through a back-and-forth battlefield with the data. This procedure is painfully slow in the beginning and will gradually become more and more efficient as one becomes more experienced. You will collect some data and finishes first round of star “*”. Then you would need to add or delete data or even engineer data for a second of star “*”. You will then keep going until you are somewhere you are confident with the result. This is a procedure implemented with human pointing directions and AI executing computations.

In whole, the full layout looks like the following flow chart. In my opinion, this flow chart should fully represent the reality of modern data science and machine learning field. As one can observe, it is a human-AI hybrid. Both human and AI work together to reach sound decisions with human functions as guidance and AI functions as executions.
