The valve
Here are 4 common valve issues that can cause actuator problems:
- A worn out valve stem
- Seized up packing
- An obstruction
- Too much torque
Repairing the actuator does not help when the valve causes a malfunction. Instead, it wastes time and money — getting you back where you started.
Therefore, before starting to open the actuator, first place the device in manual operation to see if the valve can be operated manually (this applies only to electric actuators). If the valve still does not move, the problem is most likely a valve. If the valve is operating in manual mode, there may be actuator problems.
The actuator has only four main components that can be disassembled and require repair.
Center column drive
The actuator opens and closes the valve by acting on the valve stem. This is the work of the center column drive and this drive may be interrupted. However, this occurs very rarely and is not the most likely cause of actuator problems.
Connection to the valve
More likely, the connection to the valve — the drive nut — has failed. A worn actuator drive nut does not move the valve stem properly. You can see this by removing the column cover and looking down at the center of the valve stem.
Contactor
The motor contactor is the internal electrical component of the electric actuator that tells the actuator to open or close the valve when an input signal is given. If it fails, the actuator will not work. The contactor also has fuse protection, so check the fuse first!
Motor
On an electric actuator, the electric motor provides torque to operate the valve. If the motor fails, the valve will not reach anywhere. In this case, please confirm that the duty cycle and insulation level are sufficient for the application.
