Meet England's Black Queen: Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz

This is Queen Charlotte (Sophia) of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. (German) A direct descendant from an African branch of the Portuguese Royal House, Margarita de Castro y Sousa.

She married King George III, and produced 15 children, 13 surviving into adulthood. Queen Charlotte IS the great-great-great-grandmother of the reigning queen of England, Queen Elizabeth II by her father’s side.

What didn’t you know?

1.) Queen Elizabeth II, is of African and German descent.

2.) Their family name was originally saxe-coburg-gotha (German). Until it was changed to the modern, Windsor (from Windsor Castle) in 1917.

3.) There were in FACT African royalty within the blood-line of the English monarchy.
