Hair Fall or Baldness is a common problem today among the adults and even among the youth too.

Recently over the years, it is becoming more common because of our negligence towards our health or maybe because of the chemicals we unknowingly apply in our hair. In fact there are tons of reasons because of which you might be a victim of hair loss.

The hair on our body is actually made up of a protein called Keratin which is found inside our skin. It starts growing from under our skin and its the chemical homework done by our hair follicles to grow our hair by interacting with hormones, neuropeptides and immune cells inside our body.

Every human being has their own follicle count depending upon their genes. The greater the hair follicle count, the denser your hair growth will be. So.it’s important to have a good follicle health to help you sustain a decent density of hair on your body.

Reasons behind Hair Fall

  • Lack of protein: Since hair is made up of a protein called keratin, deficiency of protein in our diet is the most obvious reason of hair fall.
  • Inheriting from your ancestors: in some people, the hair follicle health is hereditary. So if your parents or ancestors have a track record of experiencing hair fall, then you also might be unlucky to experience the same.
  • Hair dryers/straighteners: Adults mostly females use a hair dryer or straightener regularly. Its direct heat gradually weakens our hair follicles and eventually the result is regular hair loss.
  • Lack of Vitamin B & Iron: Dietary deficiency of Vitamin B and Iron is another reason for hair loss. Make sure you hit the daily required levels of iron and Vitamin B.
  • Stress: Emotional stress can hamper your natural growth of hair. Generally, between 80 and 90 percent of hair follicles on the scalp are actively growing, with the other 10 to 20 percent in the resting phase. This balance is disturbed when a person experiences stress which eventually leads to hair loss.
  • Consumption of Anabolic steroids: Bodybuilders consume anabolic steroids to boost their muscle growth. But consuming these steroids hampers your hair growth to a great extent.
  • Applying harmful chemicals: A part of their makeup, adults both men and women apply chemicals such as gels and serums on their hair. These chemicals prove to be toxic for the hair follicles leading to hair thinning, brittle hair and also hair fall.

Work on your habits

  • Massage your scalp with almond or sesame oils.
  • Avoid brushing or oiling wet hair.
  • Spare some time maybe on weekends to apply onion juice in your hair.
  • Say no to smoking and drinking
  • Increase your physical activity to reduce stress
  • Avoid giving drastic temperature changes on your hair
  • Say goodbye to harmful makeup chemicals.

Nutrition: The Saviour

  • Protein: Having protein-rich foods like eggs, chicken, pulses, beans, quinoa is the best option to avoid hair fall as it maintains the keratin level for healthy hair growth.
  • Vitamin A,B,C and E: Low levels of vitamin intake like A, B, C and E also contributes to hair fall. Make sure you include foods that are rich in Vitamin A(carrots, spinach, berries),Vitamin B( whole grains, fish), Vitamin C(oranges, tomatoes, amla) and Vitamin E(avocados, nuts).
  • Iron: Iron deficiency causes Anemia which is a major cause of hair loss.Boost your iron intake by including spinach, quinoa, broccoli in your diet. For more information on Iron, check out this blog on iron.
  • Caffeine: Caffeine helps to promote hair growth as the chemical targets DHT, which is the hormone responsible for hair loss.
  • Water: Don’t forget this underdog. Drink at least 3 to 4 litres of water per day to regulate your circulation system which in turn stimulates your hair growth.
  • Omega-3: Omega 3 not only helps prevent hair loss and breakage, but also encourages healthy, lush hair and the growth of new hair. The best sources of omega-3 are walnuts, flax-seeds and cod-liver oil. Including them in your regular diet will be a boon for your hair growth.
