Digital Minimalist (Cal Newport)

【Book Review】 Digital Minimalist

Smartphones, tablets, company PC…they are indispensable for our daily lives. My life will be disastrous if I lost my smartphone somewhere. COVID has made us used to online meeting, online interview,… to make digitals close to our lives. We partially forget a connection of humans, which takes us to the situation that we are no longer humans. I encounter a book named “Digital Minimalist”, reading and getting important information to get us back to Human Beings.

◆Declutter them, quit SNS!
Seeing our everyday lives, we are always buried with digitals. We need to have a connection with “somebody”, who one never met or who one is reluctant to send a text message. But we are huge number of friends on SNS platforms via digitals.
A female friend gives birth to a baby, who you have been AWAY, post a photos and movies that you don’t want to watch. You might be forced to push ”good” button as other guys are pushing it. You will be anxious that you have to say some reasons why you haven’t sent a message to her. If a close friend delivers a baby, you will go to her place in person to cerebrate her. If not, we will never even know it. You will never need SNS which is totally obstacle.

◆Long walk, Sports, and enjoy solitude
Human Beings have since been walking, hunting and sometimes might be alone to hide away from animals. During the time when we are moving outside we cannot watch the display of smartphone, which has a clue to declutter digitals. Basically digitals have given us convenience that we don’t need to move. In the past we have to go to a supermarket to obtain food, but we can order them online. It holds true for all of stuff surrounding us. Digital Minimalist let us know the importance of returning to what Humans used to be. Trying to take a long walk to the office, or expanding your variety of sports. Above all, even when you are alone, please have your smartphone off to take yourself to the world that you think, you feel, and you don’t have connection with others.

◆Determine schedule to move away from Digitals
We are always busy working at office, caring your child, going to buy some daily goods… Decluttering our SNS’s to make it minimum, we might need time to check smartphones whether a school teacher gives a call about your child has a slight fever or injured at school. But it’s wasteful of you to always check your smartphone wondering what is the next notice. Time can be determined according to your schedule, for example 12am at lunch time and 7pm before dinner. By checking all messages you receive at the moment, you will place a priority on each message. Many of them can’t be necessarily replied immediately.

Moderate dependence on Digitals will be needed for all Human Beings. Our lives are so transient that we are always thinking of connection with others. Digitals can enhance human relationships do an increasing volume of harms on us.
Beware of dependence on digitals!! We will continue to be Human Beings if we can give a close watch and adjust the distance every now and then.
