Mathematics is art (all the mathematicians say so)

It’s interesting to see this subject from the other side. I am an artist who tells students that design is math — everything from colour theory to graphic visual balance. Many artists don’t want to hear that. Artists do break the “rules” for effect, but as Picasso maintained, you have no right breaking the rules before mastering them. He would not teach abstract art to a person who couldn’t paint and draw realism first. Control of your art is breaking rules with purpose. Music is all math as well. Notes and scales are obvious science, but my favourite expression is that most important measurement in music is the space between notes.
