Designers can save the world.

“Can designers save the world?”, Asked my friend, then I realized, that there are people in this world who underestimate the power of design and its influence. See when we[designers] say design will change the world, it is not an exaggeration, we really do think, no not think, we believe it. Well but believing something hard enough doesn't make it true. We do not put our passion or career above the acts of charity, and the philanthropists. We have nothing against them, we respect what they do. Designers follow a different approach in their efforts of changing the world. What we aim to do in our designs is to solve a problem. Saving the world is just one very huge problem to which we are ever looking for solutions. Solving a problem through design means finding a solution to the problem while putting user’s needs first, this can be achieved by understanding the thought-process, surroundings, and other aspects that define the user who will use the product.
This does not just stay in the spectrum of products, we, the people of creative fields, have a gift of seeing the problem in a way that only a few can see; we use this gift to design or re-design better brands, better environments, and better experiences which are also functional.
Steve Jobs once said —
Design is not just what it looks like or what it feels like, design is how it works.
It is not a surprise that this is one of the most admired sayings in the design world. It describes the goal of design i.e. deliver something that prioritizes the functional aspect than visual aspect, this doesn't mean make it ugly, the end product needs to be drop dead gorgeous but IT NEEDS TO BE FUNCTIONAL OTHERWISE IT’S JUST A GOOD LOOKING WASTE. And the function of design can, in this case, be — induce the feeling of awareness in people. If your design can convince the user to use the resources in limited amount, or at least can make the user think for a second before wasting or using something irresponsibly then the goal of the design is accomplished. When you can accomplish this, you are successful, not as a designer but as a human being. Apart from environmental problems there are many other problems that can be targeted like racism, world health, peace, and security.
Now the big question is, can design even induce the feeling of responsibility in one who is using or even seeing it[product]? The answer to this question is another question, have you ever read, heard, watched something that changed your perspective? If you answered this yes, then why can design not do it?
Conclusion of this, kind of rant, is that do not underestimate the power of something tiny or huge. Each thing used in proper way can lead to wonders no one ever imagined.
