This cuts to the heart of an age old struggle within us. Revenge against abusers, drug dealers, murderers, terrorists is all the rage in society and politics because it appeals to our base instincts. It gives us 'those people’ to blame and lets us off the hook.

Understanding and remedying the cause of crimes is not sexy! Whether you are talking to your colleagues by the water cooler or whether you are shouting from a podium about how 'those people' are evil and remorseless and must be made to pay and made an example of and destroyed or whatever, you are supporting a criminal justice system that takes criminals in, destroys their families, hardens them up and then either sends them out after arbitrarily determining they are reformed or worse, keeping them in at huge cost to society.
