I agree in general with your observations and see a couple of alternatives. The first is along the lines of what Maria Camille said (which I think you have already done for the most part) and create your own brand and develop your own audience that you should be able to monetize for the original content you produce. I think you provide some of the better information available.
Second would be to ignore the big companies and look for interesting smaller companies. This companies are looking for guidance and great content but are more likely to pay appropriately — not necessarily with case but with equity. Picking some of the right small companies could yield returns well above what you are commenting about.
