Simplifying your wardrobe and your life
Love this, Krista White! I have always considered myself a minimalist. And in the last five years I have been working towards this goal (of having one outfit) as I clear out my wardrobe. It is so much easier to wear essentially the same outfit everyday. The key is finding the right outfit, and buying multiples when you find the right one.
Just this week, after a final sale shopping trip at J. Crew, I’ve finally whittled down my clothes to multiple copies of three outfits for different occasions; professional / business meetings (a dress and a cardigan with heels), everyday wear (plain t-shirt over a tank top and denim shorts with sandals), and personal events (romper with nicer sandals). Since I work remotely, I mostly wear my ‘everyday’ outfit and I only need two of my ‘work’ dresses.
I’ve purchased everything in a few different colors so I don’t wear exactly the same outfit everyday, but having few choices makes getting dressed much simpler. Since those few choices all go together, I never need to stop to think about whether my clothes match. I feel calmer starting each day without the added stress of choosing an outfit, conserving my time and energy while preventing decision fatigue. Plus, I’m happier with my outfits! And looking at my relatively empty closet somehow makes me feel more peaceful.
Many have written about successful people, mostly men, who wear the same outfit everyday. And I’m glad to see that women are starting to realize we can do the same.
Would love to hear if you stick with your new work uniform, Krista!
