Tropical Gardens with Bananas and Palm Trees in Portland, Oregon

By Yolanda Vanveen

My friend Debbi’s garden is very special to me because many of her plants we acquired together while working at garden shows selling flower bulbs in many cities from Seattle to San Francisco and Cincinnati.

Her tropical plants have thrived for many years even through colder winters (for Portland) since it rarely freezes for more than a few days and the plants are near her home so have added protection.

While she may never see bananas on her plants because the summers are too short for them to set fruit, they are a lovely addition.

Debbi’s garden is a work of art and shows us that you can garden outside of your zone with microclimates-areas that are protected because of a patio or eve to protect plants.
