If you didn’t get the results you were hoping for in Matric, you qualify to write a second national exam in the year immediately after your Matric final. You can also re-enroll for your Matric year, and retake the end of year exams, up to 3 years after you completed Matric. If you Matriculated more than 3 years ago, you can apply for an Amended Senior Certificate. The following routes to the qualification are available to obtain a matric certificate: a National Senior Certificate (NSC) or a Senior Certificate (SC).

National Senior Certificate

Matriculated after 2019

If you are younger than 21 years old you most likely qualify for a NSC (November NSC or June NSC) . Below are the available routes one can take.

Full-Time route
if you are under 21 years old, and matriculated less than three years ago, you can apply to redo your matric again. This means you will have to take all matric exams again (mid-year, prelims and finals at the end of the year) .

Part-Time Route
if you failed your matric exams or passed but want to improve your results, or reached Grade 12 but never wrote their exams can register as part-time candidates to write the NSC. You must be under 21 years old and matriculated less than three years ago. On this route may write all, or just some, matric subjects.

Matriculated before 2020

Senior Certificate (SC) examination is a school leaving qualification for adults and out-of school learners(when you are 21 years or older)

It caters for those who completed Grade 9 but dropped out of school before reaching the Grade 12 examinations, as well as those who wrote their matric exams more than three years ago, and either failed or passed but want to improve their results. Some may also want to change or add subjects to their matric qualification.

The SC is an equivalent qualification to the NSC, but while the NSC combines examinations and the School-Based Assessment to reach a final result, the SC is based only on examinations.
