I actually believe in the benefits of commenting just like you do, and I agree that it is frustrating that people tend not to comment these days.

What I meant by “commenting is not for the actual coder” is that it is not for “present me”. In the example case, the benefit would be “future yourself” who has to revisit codes you’ve written awhile ago.

If the benefit is for future myself, one naturally considers the following decision process.

I’m uncertain whether I would need to revisit my codes at the time of coding

I’m not going to put extra work because I’m not even sure I will be coming back to the code.

I will not comment

My guess is that those who don’t regularly comment believe they won’t need to come back to their codes regularly.
