The term “eSports” still makes me cringe a little when I see it. As much as I love to watch them — and I do — it’s embarrassing. Sports are bold, majestic, the celebration of tremendous athletic achievement by people in their prime. eSports are just dudes huddled around a computer. Right?

Well, not really. That’s a bit unfair. My generation was raised on video games. Is it any surprise that the leisure activity of our childhood has become a competitive pursuit? Video games are games, and games have a winner and a loser, and when you are competing at the very highest level — for substantial cash prizes — a game can easily become a sport.

Notwithstanding my own feelings about terminology, eSports are on the rise. The Intel Extreme MastersEvolution Championship Series and other major tournaments rake in millions of views every year and hand out some pretty serious wads of dough. It’s possible to be an eSports pro now, but like any athletic career, it’s hard work. Many are called, few are chosen.
